EMQ Children & Family Services announced today that the agency's chairman of the Board of Directors, Roger Barney, will be awarded the "2006 Silicon Valley Distinguished Volunteer Award" by the Association of Fundraising Professional Silicon Valley Chapter on Friday in conjunction with National Philanthropy Day. The Silicon Valley Chapter honors the contributions of local philanthropists each year. Mr. Barney is also being honored for his leadership role with HOPE Services.
"EMQ is proud that Roger will be recognized for his tireless efforts in leading and motivating people to aid organizations like EMQ and HOPE Services throughout the years," said Jerry Doyle, chief executive officer of EMQ. "Not only has Roger been an exemplary leader, he has exhibited strength and courage in speaking out to help others and prevent addiction."
Mr. Barney has been a board member for EMQ since 2001 and was elected as Chairman in 2005. He has spent over 33 years as a committee member for HOPE Services and Trustee and Trustee Emeritus for the Foundation for HOPE. Since Barney's involvement with EMQ, he has raised thousands of dollars for EMQ's Addiction Prevention Services program through the VIP (Volunteers Inspiring People) League which was co-founded by Barney's late wife, Jeannette. With their combined efforts, the VIP League has raised $750,000 in the past four years and has been fueled by the Barneys' desire to help prevent what happened to them-the addiction and death of their older daughter in 2000 to prescription drugs.
Barney was the first president of the Foundation for HOPE Board of Trustees and still actively participates in fundraising for the agency. His dedication and leadership at HOPE has enabled the Foundation to raise nearly $24 million since 1982 for HOPE Services' client programs.
About HOPE Services
In 1951, about three dozen people responded to a newspaper item sent in by a parent of a child with a developmental disability. This group began to work, plan and lobby and on February 11, 1952 HOPE Rehabilitation Services (then known as HOPE for Retarded Children) was officially recognized as a nonprofit agency serving people with developmental disabilities. Today, HOPE's services include a range of employment and job training programs, developmental activities, professional counseling, infant services, senior services, supported and independent living services, and mobility training for approximately 2,500 children, adults and seniors. Many of HOPE's clients work in the community at both large and small Silicon Valley companies, as well as government facilities throughout Santa Clara, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
